Established in 1946, just after World War II, the Blue
Angels also are based at Pensacola. The squadron consists
of 16 of the Navy and Marine Corps' best officers and
pilots and a ground crew of 110 specialists. When not
performing death defying stunts at hundreds of miles
per hour in national air shows, the pilots regularly
practice maneuvers in their McDonnell Douglas F/A-18
Hornets over the Gulf Coast, including Pleasure Island. These sessions can be viewed from the National
Museum of Naval Aviation grounds at the Pensacola base.
On select days, the
team holds an autograph session afterwards.
